Two heads are better than one? That’s what they all say! But let’s take it from these two - Abigail and Brittany Hensel, conjoined twins who have strive hard all throughout their lives. Though doctors said that they couldn’t survive that long, Abby and Brittany have prove them wrong by living the 23rd year of their lives. These strong ladies who share one body is the same as any youngsters, lively, energetic and take their days one at a time.
Conjoined twins are two babies that are born physically connected to each other, because the fertilized egg failed to separate inside the womb, like the Hensel twins. But, they have two hearts, two spines joined at the pelvis, four lungs, two esophagus, three kidneys, one ribcage, one liver, a partially shared nervous system and a shared circulatory system. From their waist down, all organs are shared including the reproductive system, intestines and bladder.
It is a rare phenomenon and most conjoined twins are stillborn or die shortly after birth. Yet, some survived and can be surgically separated depending on how many and which organs are shared as well as the skill of the surgical team.
Brittany, the left twin can’t feel anything on their right side; while Abigail, the right twin shared the same sentiments, she can’t feel anything from the left side of their body. Nevertheless, the twins work in organized manner in everything they do; typing, playing their favorite sports like
swimming, bowling, volleyball, cycling, softball and even playing piano. Although, they were born with three arms, one arm was removed surgically at the time of birth. Despite of being operated several times, the twins have remained in good health.
They rarely fight but they both could get cranky at times, especially early in the morning as their siblings say. Brittany has suffered from pneumonia twice and Abigail was always there to give her twin a helping hand.
When asked about their personal life on how they’ll date and the likes, Abigail and Brittany simply evaded the question telling them that the world need not to know what they’re going to do. And they’re right!
These two shared with us an important lesson, that no matter how tough life is, together –we can do much
